How to turn off “Search the web” results in Windows 11


When you run searches on Windows 11 from the operating system’s Start menu, you get local results as well as web results provided by Bing by default. Microsoft introduced the web search feature in Windows 10 and kept the feature in Windows 11.

Many Windows 11 users see web search as a way for Microsoft to promote its Bing search engine, not something that adds value to the search functionality. The web search integration has interrupted Windows search at least once on Windows 10, and it is possible that it will happen again.

Disable web search in Windows 11

Windows 11 comes with an official option to turn off web search in the Start menu. This is not an option in the Settings app. Although there is an option to manage the search for cloud content in the Settings app, it does not affect the Internet search in the Windows 11 Start menu, but the content of the Microsoft account, for example from OneDrive, which can to be fired.

Just turn off the options on the page and start a search; you’ll notice that Bing web search results are always included.

The official option is available in the Group Policy Editor and the Registry. The Group Policy Editor is only available in the Professional and Enterprise editions of Windows 11. Home users must make the change in the registry to get rid of “Search the Web” on the Start menu.

The Group Policy option

  1. Open Start, type gpedit.msc and select the Group Policy Editor item to launch Local Group Policy Editor. Note that you need elevated rights to access the tool.
  2. Use the sidebar on the left to navigate to Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> Windows Components> Search.
  3. Double-click on the “Do not allow web search” policy.
  4. Set the policy status to Enabled.
  5. Click on OK.
  6. Double-click the “Do not search the web or show web results in search” policy.
  7. Set the policy status to Enabled.
  8. Click on OK.
  9. Restart the PC.

Note that you may still be able to get web results after making the change. If so, you will need to make the changes in the registry to stop web search results in the Windows 11 Start menu.

The Register option

  1. Select Start, type regedit.exe, and select Registry Editor to launch it. Accept the UAC prompt that appears.
  2. Navigate to Computer HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Search
  3. Right-click Find and select New> Dword (32-bit) Value.
  4. Name the value BingSearchEnabled.
  5. Double click on the new Dword and set the data to 0.

The change should be visible immediately. Just run a search from the Start menu to verify that no web search results are showing on Windows 11 PC anymore.

Just remove the Dword value again if you want to restore the default functionality.
