The members of the Security Council congratulated the Iraqi people and the Government of Iraq on the occasion of their last elections, held on October 10, 2021. The members of the Security Council welcomed the interim reports that the elections were conducted without clashes and allowed significant technical and procedural improvements. from previous Iraqi elections.

Members of the Security Council congratulated the High Independent Electoral Commission (IHEC) for conducting a technically sound election. They commended the Government of Iraq for its electoral preparations and for preventing violence on election day.

The members of the Security Council commended the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for providing IHEC with the technical assistance and the international monitoring team requested by the Government of Iraq to strengthen the electoral process and promote transparency. The members of the Security Council thanked UNAMI for its assistance and commended UNAMI for being objective in its efforts to support Iraq throughout the electoral process. They commended the efforts of IHEC and UNAMI to promote the political participation of women.

Members of the Security Council also commended the efforts of member states and other international organizations to observe the elections, including the European Union Long-Term Election Observation Mission, the Arab League, the Organization of the United Nations. Islamic cooperation and others, as well as national organizations. .

Members of the Security Council deplored the recent threats of violence against UNAMI, IHEC personnel and others.

Members of the Security Council reiterated the Secretary-General’s appeal to all stakeholders to show patience and respect for the electoral calendar. Members of the Security Council stressed that any electoral dispute that may arise should be resolved peacefully through established legal channels. Once the results are ratified, Security Council members look forward to the peaceful formation of an inclusive government that reflects the will of the Iraqi people and their call for a stronger democracy.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their support for the Iraqi government and their commitment to the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Iraq. Members of the Security Council reaffirmed their support for the efforts of the Government of Iraq to implement meaningful reforms and promote inclusive political dialogue aimed at responding to the legitimate demands of the Iraqi people to fight corruption, provide essential services. and grassroots, diversify the economy, create jobs, improve governance and strengthen viable and responsive state institutions.
